The Western Route is currently the only way to cross Africa entirely from north to south. We’ve just driven it ourselves. From January through May 2027, we’ll be leading a small group along the same route—organized and guided, but true overlanding. No infrastructure, no guaranteed itineraries, no comfort zone.
The route in six chapters
North Africa & the Sahara – West Africa – the Gulf of Guinea – Central Africa – Angola & Namibia – South Africa. Morocco as a gentle start, Mauritania with sand, heat, and nights among the dunes, then down the Atlantic coast to Cape Town. Highlights along the way: gorilla tracking in the Congo, a Himba village in Namibia, wild camping in the Sahara.
Led by Johnny—and a second guide
Johnny has been traveling through Africa since 2010, from a year in Cape Town to expeditions through Namibia and Tanzania to a complete cross-continent journey. He knows every kilometer of the route from personal experience and handles visas, border crossings, and checkpoints. A second experienced guide with his own vehicle accompanies the expedition along the entire route.

Here’s what a typical day looks like
We set out after breakfast; on average, 5 to 6 days of driving per week. We arrive at the campsite in the afternoon, then have time to explore, cook, and relax. In between, we take days off for visa processing, vehicle maintenance, and sightseeing.
What you’ll need
Your own four-wheel-drive vehicle (all-terrain tires recommended), availability from January through May 2027, and a desire for a real expedition rather than a vacation. Off-road experience isn’t required: We’ll start with easy trails and build up gradually. Participation as a solo traveler is also possible.
Price
€14,990 per person based on two people per vehicle. Solo drivers: €7,990 surcharge. Not included: Fuel (approx. €3,000–4,000), visas (approx. €1,500 per person), meals, insurance, return flight.
