Rooftop tent experiences: What no one honestly tells you beforehand

Rooftop tent experiences: What no one honestly tells you beforehand

Hardly any other form of travel combines freedom, spontaneity and experiencing nature in such an uncomplicated way as a roof tent on your own car.

Wake up in the morning somewhere by a quiet lake. Slowly open the zipper. Cold air flows into the tent. Outside, there is still fog over the water, while the first rays of sunlight slowly make their way over the mountains or the sea on the horizon. No hotel corridor. No breakfast buffet. Just this one moment, somewhere on the road, with a hot coffee in your hand and the feeling of being exactly where you want to be.

But after countless conversations with travelers from the OLLI community, we also realize that there is sometimes a world of difference between Instagram romance and real everyday life in a rooftop tent.

Things that people often only understand after their first real rooftop tent trip.

This is therefore not intended to be a typical rooftop tent buying advice article, but rather the quintessence of countless conversations, news, meetings and our own travels.

1. a roof tent doesn't just change your car. It changes the way you travel.

Many people start by looking for the right roof tent for their car. By size, weight, roof load or the right roof rack solution. And only realize later that they haven't just bought camping equipment. But a completely different style of travel. You suddenly drive fewer kilometers per day. You stop somewhere for longer. Observe the weather, light and landscape more consciously again. The idea of "just get going" often turns into a spontaneous "it's actually perfect here right now". Many people describe this as the biggest surprise of all. Because a roof tent slows you down almost automatically.

"At first, we thought the roof tent would simply be a cheaper alternative to the van. Today we realize: It has actually changed our whole way of traveling. We stay longer, drive less and experience things much more consciously on the road." -Nina & Marc, on the road with their Defender in Norway

2. wind sounds much more dramatic at night than during the day

Almost every rooftop tent newcomer knows this moment. The first strong gust of wind at night. The flapping of the tent canvas. The slight rocking. And suddenly you're up there like a captain in a storm. During the day, everything still seemed comfortable. At night, your imagination sometimes develops amazing creativity. People who have never slept in a roof tent before often underestimate how intensely they suddenly perceive sounds and weather. The good news is that almost everyone gets used to it faster than expected.

3. condensation in the roof tent is a bigger issue than most people think

Surprisingly few people talk about this on social media. But on cold nights, in the rain or in the transitional seasons, many people notice: Moisture in the roof tent suddenly becomes a real issue. Especially with several people in the tent or too little ventilation.

This is precisely why many experienced rooftop tenters now say that good ventilation is often more important than additional bags, LED lights or fancy accessories. Because sleeping dry beats nice marketing. If you want to buy a roof tent, you should therefore ideally not only look at the design or sleeping area, but also at ventilation, material quality and suitability for everyday use in bad weather.

4. the best pitch is rarely the most spectacular

Beginners often look for the perfect view first. Experienced travelers tend to look for: Protection from the wind. Peace and quiet. A level surface. Shade in the morning. As little stress as possible. Because sleeping badly with a beautiful view is still bad sleep in the end. Many people only learn this after a few nights on the road - whether wild camping, on road trips through Scandinavia or on their first weekend at a campsite.

5. many people buy far too much equipment at the beginning

Awning. Shower. Kitchen box. Powerstation. Fairy lights. Axe. Fire pan. Sandboards. And after two trips you realize: half of them have never been used. Because at some point, many people understand: The real feeling of luxury on the road often doesn't come from having more equipment. But through less effort. Many people underestimate how quickly weight, costs and complexity increase, especially when setting up a roof tent for the first time.

"After the first trip, we understood why so many people can't get away from the roof tent. It's not so much the tent itself. It's this simple life on the road." -Patrick , on the road with Toyota Hilux & roof tent

6. quick erection of the roof tent is massively underestimated

Almost all roof tents appear uncomplicated in the summer sun.

It only gets exciting

  • in the rain
  • in windy conditions
  • after ten hours of driving
  • or when you are simply tired

Then you suddenly decide whether a roof tent really suits your own style of travel. Because the difference between "sleeping in two minutes" and "fighting for another ten minutes" feels surprisingly big at night.

Even more underestimated, however, is often the dismantling the next morning. Especially in the rain. Wet tent canvas, damp ladder, cold fingers, quickly stowing everything away and moving on. For many travelers, this is exactly where the romantic idea separates from real everyday life on the road.

People who frequently change location or go on longer road trips in particular will at some point become almost obsessive about simple procedures, quick actions and as little stress as possible. This is precisely why many frequent travelers later consciously opt either for particularly fast hard-shell roof tents or for simple, robust solutions without a lot of technology.

"The best moments rarely happen where you've planned them. But somewhere between rain, coffee and a spontaneous place to spend the night with a view." - Nadine & Luca

7 Some sell their roof tent again after a year. Others never again.

And both are perfectly okay. Because a rooftop tent is not a status symbol. It's an incredibly personal way of traveling. For some, it means maximum freedom. For others, it's simply too much effort. And that's exactly why practically new rooftop tents regularly change hands at our OLLI flea market. Not because they're bad. But because you only really understand this style of travel once you've experienced it for yourself.

Many people say after their first trip: "Never again without one." Others: "It was exciting. But I'm more Team Van or Hotel." And maybe that's not what it's all about in the end.

  • not about the perfect roof tent
  • not about the most expensive setup
  • not about the most beautiful Instagram photo
  • but about the good feeling of simply being on the road

Maybe that's the real magic of rooftop tent travel. That you learn again on the road how little it sometimes takes to feel alive. If you've got wanderlust now: In our OLLI road trip stories, travelers talk about exactly these moments on the road - honest and unfiltered.
